The Learn to Skate Program is part of The Skate School at Fox Valley Ice Arena. This Program is primarily focused on teaching the fundamentals of skating children, teens and adults.
Learn to Skate USA Membership
All skate school participants, for both figure skating and hockey classes, must have a valid learn to skate USA Membership purchased in their name. This is an $22 mandatory insurance that lasts for a year. The calendar year for Basic Skills is July 1 through June 30. Please purchase on our website before you register for your skate school class, as you will not be able to register for skate school classes unless you have this purchased. Choose ‘Register’ on the menu bar on the homepage of our website, then choose ‘Memberships’. Each skater is required to have this membership.

The Skate School at Fox Valley is excited to announce its transition into the United Skates Figure Skating USFS Basic Skills program. This program was specifically designed by US Figure Skating to be the best beginning and continuing ice skating program that serves the needs of both recreational and competitive skaters.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Basic Skills Program is to provide a goal-oriented program that encourages ice skating at all levels and to enhance the quality of skating skills at these levels.
CLASSES AND DESCRIPTIONS
Parent / Tot Class
This class gives a parent and their child a chance to learn how to skate together at the same time. The first few weeks, parents will skate along with child, helping them if needed. Guided by the instructor.
When registering, you will need to register your child for the class, and both you and your child for the Learn to Skate USA membership. The parent/tot ratio must be 1:1.
Family Fun Learn to Skate
A fun way to learn to skate as a family. All ages and abilities are welcome! Minimum of 2 family members.
Learn to Skate classes invites children age 3-5 to learn the joys of ice skating in a safe, introductory setting. Young skaters will have fun while learning how to fall and get back up, how to march across the ice and ultimately build confidence in themselves and their abilities. The classes, divided into four progressive levels for kids with no prior skating experience, help preschool-age skaters develop the coordination and strength to move across the ice.
Learn to Skate 1 (age 3-5)
This class is for young beginners who are interested in pursuing figure skating or hockey. The class focuses on introducing young children to beginning skating skills in an atmosphere of fun, using games and ice-safe toys to help teach basic skills. Elements include proper falling and getting up, marching, gliding and forward swizzles.
Learn to Skate 2 (age 3-5)
This class is for young children pursuing figure skating who are familiar with skating or hockey. Skaters in Learn to Skate 1 progress to this level. Elements include forward skating, one foot glides, forward and backward swizzles, curves and beginning snowplow stops.
Learn to Skate 3 (age 3-5)
Prerequisite: Learn to Skate 2. This class is for young children, pursuing figure skating or hockey who have completed Learn to Skate 2. Elements include forward pumps and stroking, advanced backward swizzles, one foot glides on a circle and beginning forward crossovers, backward pumps and backward stroking.
Basic 1 (ages 6 and up)
For those who have never skated, or have never had formal lessons, skaters will learn the basics of figure skating, how to balance on the ice as well as forward and backward skating. These levels are the fundamentals of the sport.
Hockey 1 (ages 6 and up)
Students in Hockey 1 will learn: how to sit on ice and stand up, the proper hockey stance, march forward across the ice, forward two foot glide: one time the skaters height, dip or squat, scooter pushes or T-push, forward swizzles, snowplow stop, and backward skating.
Teen Hockey Learn To Skate (ages 9 -17)
If you are between the age of 9 and 17 and want to learn how to skate and play hockey, then this class is for you. This class is for those who have never skated or have never had formal lessons. Skaters will learn the very basics of skating, balance and forward and backward skating.
Students in Teen Hockey Learn to Skate will learn: how to sit on ice and stand up, the proper stance, march forward across the ice, forward two foot glide: one time skaters height, dip or squat, scooter pushes or t-push, forward swizzles, snowplow stop, backward stance, backward skating, skating forward using full strides, forward one foot glides: right and left, backward hustle, backward swizzles, glide turns: both directions, and moving snowplow stops.
Adult Learn To Skate
It’s never too late to learn how to skate. If you are are 18 or older and want to learn how to skate, then this class is for you. This class is for those who have little to no skating experience or have never had formal lessons. Skaters will learn the very basics of skating, balance and forward and backward skating.
